She starts the car
but sits a minute waiting
staring down the driveway
at the patch of sun and green
she can just see at its end
Her getaway in the midst of the city
A patch of green
Plants trees and vines tangle
with abandon
and reach for the sky
Grapevines everywhere
One yard to the next
Down the block interconnected
like the people on this block
who shovel each other’s sidewalks
water their neighbor’s tree
Kids who all play together
Moms and dads linger after school pickup
with one on the hip
the other straggling behind
Codependent
Cohabitating
Cooperating
Interconnected

I live in a neighborhood like that. We had our annual block party on Sept. 13th. The block parties go back maybe 35 years.
